The Karnak Temple is actually a complex of three main temples, smaller enclosed temples, and several outer temples. It is the largest temple complex in the world. This grouping was built and enlarged over a 1300 year period. The avenue of ram-headed sphinxes leads the visitor towards the massive front of the first pylon each one holding a statue of the king, Rameses II, in its paws. The famous hypostyle hall is 54,000 square feet with 134 columns and is the largest room of any religious building in the world.
